NTH tyro – digital typeface – specimen sheet

The unassuming functionality of a stencil typeface with stark angles hinting at 1970’s chic.

WOW…. I have always been fascinated by what goes into creating a whole typeface. even though I am totally in love with type, I have never tried. do you use a particular program for it, or is it all done in illustrator or some such thing? love it by the way and will most def be adding it to my collection. =D

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thnaks so much JLBT. Professional type creation software from Fontlab can be very expensive. I chose the free online type creation option, Fontstruct (from “FontShop:http://fontstruct.fontshop.com/learn_more). You build the font from little ‘bricks’. It is very time consuming strating from nothing as I did. But it satisfied my curiousity and desire to experiment. Now maybe I will purchase the cheap software option Type Tool (US$100).

I love it – what’s your policy on using this in commercial projects? Is it rights-free, or for personal stuff only?

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thanks Simon. It’s RF and ok for commercial projects. I would love to see samples of how it is being used.

Excellent Steve, I was hoping you’d finish this one off after seeing the preview. Great way to present it too, lovely clean layout.

I found that fontstruct site a couple of months ago, seems like a really powerful and simple tool for font creation. I thought about building my fonts in it, but i just haven’t found the time yet.

    Great work mate.

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thanks ayarti. Fontstruct is a good way to make fonts cheaply. But I think ease of use would be higher on proper software. FS is defeinitely worth checking out though. Has curve limitations.

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thanks Frank. It has wet my appetite for using proper type creation software.

this is very interesting…I’ll be checking this stuff out and going for that free download!

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thanks Soxy. It very satisfying setting stuff in your own typeface and seeing how it performs.

This is fantastic. It’s a beautiful typeface, although something about the numbers doesn’t quite look right to me. Definately will be downloading it though.

  • Steve Leadbeater replied

Thanks. I think the low mid point on the numbers may be what you mean. They follow the capital letters. The lowercase characters have an x-height higher than this.
