I went to New York in 1984 and stayed till 1998
I worked in the Film industry first locating and buying Film rights for US and European movies -films to be sold in Australia as Videos, so I was charged with negotiating how much we paid and aquiring the best quality product I could for sales in Australia on the then expanding Video Market. This had me working at all the major and independent Film Studios and with what is now Showtime.
It was a very exciting time. I had a lot of fun that will one day form as a base for
Look Hook the Book . I met a lot of people and attended a lot of meetings and I was involved in over 2000 movies being sent to and produced as videos in Australia.
It was like arriving on another planet when I arrived in Manhatten.. it is a city of 8 miles long and is 4 miles wide at its widest
It houses over 8 million people and its poulation daily grows to between 16 to 20 million people who commute in from surrounds like new Jersey and Connecticut and from around the US and the World.
After the Film Business I worked in the Design area particulaly in Product package design.
I sold package design to Perrier, Nestle, Seagrams< Colgate Palmolive ,Absolut Vodka, Johnny Walker and Grand Metropolitan which was then Guiness beer before it was owned by Diageo a big global company as it is now.
I lived in Manhatten on east 23rd st between 1st and second and had an office on 10th st. between 2nd and 3rd. A house in Connecticut kept me sane on weekends and when ever I could squeeze time away. I painted and sold art in New York. Which was a very exciting time. The Art scene there is the most competetive in the World I would go so far as to say.
I have paintings hanging in some beautiful homes and offices in Manhatten and New Jersey, which I’m proud of. After designing and running a business with my former partner, I went on to run a company importing Australian Wine Beer and water into the US… I got a deal with the US. Absolut Vodka distributors. So it was all fine experience.
A song that takes me back there in my mind is below. Im now happy to be back where I was born, Melbourne is a great city though these days it is becoming a bit congested with 4 million people and 33% of capacity water supply.
But MMMM I’ve done a few meetings in my time and made some business happen.
This is how it felt " – )) at times.
