The Shot

“Oh, hello Officer.”

“What was I doing in the Tiger enclosure? Well, that is where the shot was. You see, nothing matters but THE SHOT”

“Yes Sir, I know it can be dangerous for people. But I am a photographer. When looking through the lens a photographer is no longer subject to the dangers of the world.”

“Yes, of course I can close my eyes and walk a straight line…”

(Taken at the Los Angeles Zoo with a Nikon D300 using a Nikkor 80-400 f4 lens).

Mimi Yoon gave this shot an unusual and honored tribute by making it into a painting. My thanks goes to her for this. She did an incredible job:

  • Julie Langford

    Julie Langfordcommunity host

haha, jut read your description in more detail. It reminded me of a day I sent talking to one of the officials of Longleat. He told me a story of a woman, who being a keen enthusiast of photography, actually got out of her car to get closer to a male lion she was intent on getting a great shot of. While taking the few steps closer to him [away from her car], two females came around from the other side of her vehicle – thereby, cutting off her escape route. The whole park ground to a halt as park guides all ran in to do their stuff, getting her safely back into a park jeep, and her car towed out of the enclosure. Can you believe that?

  • Steve Buffington replied

Wow Julie, what a story about the lions! It brings several things to mind:
I have often marveled at why Man is not attacked more than he is by the larger predators.
Have you noticed just HOW rough survival is out there in nature? In Man’s world if someone calls someone else a bad name its a big deal. In nature there is no compasion between predator and prey. The Tiger does not let the cute deer go because it felt sorry for it. It is, as they say, tooth and nail and I am very glad MOST people have risen above that.
Thanks for the great comment and story.
    Best,
    Steve

    Great shot!

I have one of a leopard that jumped up against the glass while I was framing my shot. It was a bit unnerving. It did that 3 times and each time it got more and more aggressive (growling, snarling, scratching…). I decided to take my young son to see the tigers instead… much better behaved. :-)

Hello Wayne. Nice to meet you. With my child there, I would have moved on quickly. Alone, I would have stayed there. Sounds like a great opportunity.—Steve

  • Arletta

    Arletta 23 days ago

I am against that sort of behavior, for, as you may or may not know, Binky, the polar bear, had tourists get into the enclosure a few times and everytime got ill, until finally, death occurred. Now, they told us it was this, or that, some fungus among us, etc. but everyone knew the truth was that Binky died of food poisoning, due to inconsiderate, badly washed tourists climbing into the enclosure.

So, shame on you for putting that tiger in danger, since you don’t know what your brand of deodorant, etc. might do to the lovely beasts insides, should it decide to take you up on the invitation to bite the meat you put into it’s path.

    However, the photograph is lovely!

  • Steve Buffington replied 23 days ago

LOL. I am so sorry that I have offended you. I did not think about putting the poor animal at risk!! I will think before I shoot next time-well, maybe not.-Steve
