Hummingbird Nest

Steve Buffington

Hummingbird Nest

It is finally spring time after a long, cold, hard Southern California winter. And the birds and the bees tell us so. Well, I don’t have evidence of the bees, but I do of the birds. And if you don’t think this is a macro then you have not seen a Hummingbird nest. This nest is about the diameter of a quarter.

I believe this is a macro! I’ve seen a Hummingbird nest! SO tiny, but I did not have a camera with me at the time…I don’t think I could have done as nice a job with it as you did here Steve! Beautiful shot! :]

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you Tracy. Well, I think you would do just fine when you get the chance to shoot one of these. You will you know.

  • Braedene

    Braedene

Steve, magic – never seen their nests but I have seen a few hummingbirds and all the pics people upload here. What a great capture – two little mouths to feed. So cute.

    Love it. Liz

  • Steve Buffington replied

Hello Liz. There is something about these guys. I don’t think there are many people who don’t smile when they see one of these little guys. I mentioned in one of my big cat shots that the big cats are mystical. But on the bird side, these guys have that same quality.

  • Steve Buffington replied

LOL. Thank you and it being a fav means a lot to me. It is actually what I watch most to see if my shots communicate. And about the weather—I don’t know what you mean. Its gotten below 50 degrees several times!

  • Sharon Mau

    Sharon Mau

They are so cute it makes me laugh!! I remember having a nest in a Eucalyptus tree on a large branch, and the tiny nest had two little baby birds so small it was amazing. One facing one direction and the other the opposite direction, side by side, and it was so sweet as I watered the flower garden the mother would fly down onto the ground, drink and bathe in the fresh water at my feet. I loved how she trusted me. I stood on a ladder to view them as they grew. And when they flew from the nest they followed their mother to bathe in the garden each morning. Mahalo for such a wonderful memory. They are so adorable.

  • Steve Buffington replied

What a great story. Well, then you know how fast these guys group up. Everyday there is a difference. Something about these birds. I smile every time I see them. And thank you viewing Sharon.

How lucky you were to spot this little nest….Surprized Mama wasn’t dive bombing you!

  • Steve Buffington replied

Mama was no where to be seen when I was shooting these two. She has been there every night to keep them warm, but I guess she is out getting fueled up during the day. I have heard these guys have to have huge amounts of calories to keep going.

Totally awesome, Steve! I can’t even imagine how you discovered this tiny little nest, but what a wonderful find! Hummingbirds are amazing, did you know they migrate? I read it somewhere. . . Congrats on all the wonderful features – well deserved! ~|}:)

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you so much for such a great comment. The trick I have found is to notice where a female is constantly hanging around. I have found 3 so far and its always walking by and noticing the hummer flying away from approximately the same location. Good hunting. The nests are fun to shoot and amazing to see.

    Firstly Congratulations on your very well Deserved Features. This is a brilliant close-up. My husband and I started to feed Hummingbirds this year, it is sad to see them go now with the pending Winter. However, we are looking forward to their return next Season. In Utah we get Rufus Humming birds and we learnt that only Females wag their tails and that simply liked our sugar and water mix with no colour. They are so beautiful amazing birds:=}

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you Bella. There is certainly something special about them. Whenever they go zooming by, no matter what I am doing, I tend to watch and smile!—Steve
