Nature Unplugged
Yes, I have been to the zoo. I am a supporter of zoos. The reaction of the animals to zoo life runs the gamet, from those that are happier than in the wild, to those that are miserable. And to the latter my heart goes out.
But zoos play a vital role in bringing public awareness up about the animals.
John Doe is more likely to vote against the bill opening up the new wilderness to exploitation if he has seen a Grizzly and a Puma first hand, than if he has only seen pictures on TV or in a book.
The animals don’t know it, but they are helping to save our planet.

This is fantastic. what a great angle and contrast

Thank you. I tried B&W, but there is a just a little warmth in the actual color of the Zebra that I liked better.

Thank you Big D. Hope it comes through on my writing how much I care about this critters.
Clark Thompson
When zoos are set up right, I am a huge fan. Natural, open enclosures with lots of space and no fences is what I like to see. Victorian era zoos were nothing short of prisons and should all be replaced along with that line of thinking. In my opinion, as a photographer, if I can get a shot off of an animal without a chain link fence in front of my lens, it is a banner day. This photograph is awash with natural symmetry. Wonderful, wonderful photograph!
Steve Buffington replied
Hello Clark, I am only late on replying as I did not want to just say “thank you.” I agree with all you say. The zoos should be more ideal. But inside the urban areas I think if they give the animals room without the bars and use motes, and the animals are well taken care then I am willing to cut some slack. The LA Zoo is packed every weekend. The animal parks where the animals roam are much less busy. And many can’t get to a more remote area (such as inner city kids). So we agree, but I am just a little more forgiving in allowing them to get the animals seen and interacted with.—Steve
janeymac

I like zoos too, Bristol Zoo (our local one) does a lot for conservation & breeding programs. Anyway, this zebra shot is STUNNING! Love the close up, beautifully done.
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Karen. Yes, I have a feeling the people at zoos really do care for the most part. I have met some of the volenteers at Los Angeles and they are certainly that way.
CynLynn

Louise Robinson
Great perspective. Nicely done :)
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Louise. And great stuff you have.
Joanne Bradley
Brilliant composition on this image, it works so well as an abstract! I agree with your commentary as well. There are always advantages to be found as well as disadvantages and as much as I would prefer that the animals remain in their natural habitat this does not always take place and better for us to learn from reality than to commend blindly and learn nothing!
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Joanne. We are certainly on the same page. Beside, many of the animals greatly benefit from having an interaction from humans. We humans communicate more than any other animal and all life forms benefit from that, as long as the communication is kept constructive, not destructive.—Steve
Luann Ryan
A great abstract !
Steve Buffington replied
Hello Luann! Thanks a lot.

Thank you Ellen. These guys are beautiful. And alert. They watch your every move.
Leanna Lomanski
I too, have very mixed feelings about zoos. I think they serve an important purpose but also evoke a lot of sadness for me personally. This is an excellent image, clearly a composition of patience and study and photographed with respect for this beautiful animal. Wonderful!
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Leanna. We share that feeling. Did I shock you with my other viewpoint in the BM?
kathy s gillen...

Steve.. i love your work.. it is so diverse and .. good!!!!!!!!! this is so beautiful.. it is quite emotional ..for me.. beautiful creatures of the world..
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Isa. Those words make me blush. You know, I get the shakes if I think about posting two shots that are even similar. A curse or not, depending on the viewpoint. But diversity is what I strive for.
CraigsMom
Wow, these stripes are vibrant! Wonderful composure!!!

loving this one.
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Kevin. And very nice gallery you have.
Gili Orr
I see what you mean;-) Great job here, Steve! And yes, zoos play a role in making people care more about animals… I think. Still, I think we should put pressure on zoos (or goverments?) to make them feel as little of a prison for animals as possible. It happens in some places in Europe – hardly any cages, more space to roam, water separates you from the animals instead of metal bars…
Steve Buffington replied
Thanks for the look Gili. I was obviously hoping you’d stop by this one. Agreed fully in moving toward an ideal on the zoo front. You have been to the LA Zoo. Not perfect, but I don’t think too bad either. I have never been to a European zoo, but I have heard they are the leaders and innovators. It will get better. They have a more important role as time go along I think.
janfoster
Oh wow great capture
Steve Buffington replied
Hello Jan. I missed your comment on this one and I apologize for such a late response. Thank you so much.
Tina Longwell
Very true Steve. We have a very small zoo in Rochester NY that is extremely involved with species conservation. We have had Polar Bear Births and the more “like a natural environment” the better.
My 17 year old son has volunteered his summers there as well. Young people need to know the importance of giving back!
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Tina. I certainly get a variety of responses with my commentary and I can see we agree (with the stipulation that the zoos take care of the animals and they are not just in cells). That is great about your son volenteering!—Steve
David Clarke
Excellent shot, Steve, great composition. I agree with your thoughts on zoos. Sadly there are too many second rate ones in the world where the animals just aren’t happy. But when they are set up and run with care, concern and sufficient funds, they play an invaluable role.
Steve Buffington replied
Then we agree in full David. My commentary certainly did not include those places where the animals are not well taken care of or are just in cages. And thanks for the comment as always.
BettinaSchwarz
love it!! zebras make such awesome subjects :) those funky striped pyjamas are just really good fun to photograph – you got a superb shot here!!

parmi
Steve this is fantastic, the markings are so clear and you have achieved a total b&w shot in colour with such high contrast. They are such incredible animals, especially up close. I completely agree with your view on zoos, a necessary evil almost, for the greater good.
Steve Buffington replied
Thanks Parmi for the compliment and I thought you’d be interested. They are amazing creatures and certainly lend themselves to art. I don’t know what gets more shot and painted, zebras or tigers. Perhaps its a tie. Of course I would like you to see more of my work and I will review yours as well. Art to me is timeless, so there is no hurry on your side of things. I’ll be watching.—Steve
Bunny Clarke
Excellent capture and composition. I really like the contrasts in this.
Steve Buffington replied
Thank you Bunny. You know how it is. One just has to have at least one zebra shot in the portfolio.
