Full Moon Arising

Full Moon Arising

Recently Mother Nature helped me out by having the moonrise at the same time as the sunset, just so I could keep some detail in the landscape when shooting it. She also directed the moon to come up just above two Hollywood landmarks to make the shot more interesting. As a finishing touch, she added some clouds to reflect the moon light. I think she did a good job.

In the foreground is the Hollywood United Methodist Church and in the background is the Griffith Observatory. Both are historical landmarks, built in the 1930s. As a bit of trivia, the Observatory is a major part of the James Dean movie Rebel Without a Cause.

Steve, this is a very difficult shot to make and it came out beautifully. It has nice crisp details. I’d be very interested to know what your camera settings were… The moon appeared 14% larger that night because it was at apogee in it’s orbit around the earth. This is also known as a “wolf moon”. We won’t see it this large again until 2010. Great shot!

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you Clark. You are right, it was tricky and I sent you a BM giving you the gory details.

I’m sorry… make that perigee, not apogee!

This is so beautiful and absolutely amazing!!

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you Sharon. And as a note, you won’t see that view with both land marks in it in any post card. There is only one damn roof that has that angle and all other angles have buildings or trees in the way. A pain to get to, but worth it.

  • Luann Ryan

Definitely a special moment captured, very beautiful !!

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you. It worked out well. I was nervous. Seemed like a shot that would not be there for some time to come, so I didn’t want to screw it up.

Incredible shot Steve. I was at a memorial service that evening so I missed it. I am assuming this was taken Saturday, Jan 10 and I’m sure that is the church at Highland and Franklin, right? I live not too very far from there. Val

  • Steve Buffington replied

Hello Val. Sorry you missed the chance. Obviously more important business. You are right about which church it is and about the date. I was ready and in place when the moon came up. But it was the next night that suprised me. I thought I’d have another chance and the moon came up nowhere near these landmarks and also came up about an hour after sundown. Completely different and no where near as magical. Until then I had no idea I had been so lucky with the composition of the shot. Thanks Val. We are certainly cruisen the same neighborhood!

    Wonderful, magical Shot

  • Steve Buffington replied

Thank you very much. Some shots just happen, but this one was well planned out. But I learned that WHERE the moon comes up is not at all consistent day to day and I got lucky on this one. Again, thanks and appreciated.
