Serenity at Convict Lake
Convict Lake is located along Highway 395 in the Eastern High Sierra just southeast of Mammoth Lakes, and due west of Crowley Lake nestled right up against Mount Morrison. The Lake has a similar appearance to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada in that the water has a greenish tint surrounded by a mountain range. One of the many things to do around the lake is hike up into the John Muir Wilderness, fish on the lake and paddleboating.
The lake was named after an incident in 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, led by Sheriff Robert Morrison, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Morrison was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him.
