Portrait of a Pied Butcherbird. This very common bird is sometimes mistaken for the Australian Magpie. They both come from the same family group, with the Butcherbird somewhat smaller than the adult Magpie. Image taken from the outside seating area of a golf-course restaraunt.

Beautiful closeup! What do these birds sound like? Crows? They are corvids?
Thanks BluAlien…..their calls “combine a rich quality, it’s far-carrying notes seem to combine the lonliness of its outback haunts.” To my way of sound they sound like the higher pitch of an Australian magpie but perhaps a bit more distinctive. I think you could probably place them in the Corvid group. Regards, Steve

Wonderful close up! Looks like he was there to pose for you.
Thanks Tiamaria. Seems as though he maybe was posing…….but, you know, you have to be quick as he was gone very soon after this. Cheers, Steve
