Artist's Description

Macro image of a Bladder Cicada, (cystosoma saundersii). These cicadas usually only emerge at night and its unusual to see them in the daylight. Most cicadas have transparent wings but this type have opaque and coloured wings to aid camouflage. They have a habit, if annoyed, to “play dead” in an attempt to avoid predators. I’m told that if you handle one of these cicadas it will empty its bladder onto you ! Taken at Mango Hill, Brisbane, Queensland.
