The Buddha Comes to China

In Sichuan a traveller
On the way
To visit the birth
Of his granddaughter
An auspicious event
And pay homage
To a great warrier
But his feet were tired

A forgotten place
Ravine and cliff-hang
Green grass tangling
Around his face
In time a rocky spring
By which ancient writing
‘Here is all remains to show
Where stood the Buddha’

He laughs
’What folly!’
For he knew
The Buddha never came to China
Drinking the water deeply
Then refreshed
Moving along the path
Enlightened
