Animal Intelligence

The sugared cheap white wrappings of this life
Clash with, like knives, the deviousness it holds
Is man alone in such dual reality
Are animals as free as we suppose

I wonder if the tiny insect realm
Holds in its heart and mind a god called man
If they accept his crushing and his pesticides
As divine will and pray to be forgiven

If white sheep practice prejudice on black
And teach their lambs to see in black and white
And so secure their right to greener grass
By unseen segregation from the impure plight

If bees, the sacrificial servants of their throne
Carrying the nectar to their vaulted hive
Believe the execution of the drone
By royal decree, deterrence from its crime

While spiders quietly spin their slippery web
Luring the innocents to their monstrous bed
I wonder if they in their dreams
Conceive the fates of twisted schemes

And lazy cats sing vainly through the night
Waiting for their shining orb to rise
A tale of recreating there earth’s paradise
Miraculously without need to pounce on mice
