Artist's Description

Dürnstein, located at the beginning of the Wachau along the river danube.

This place is famous for a couple of reasons:
- the “Marillenblüte”, the time of the year when the apricot trees are in bloom and the Wachau is lined by the blooming trees
- the blue church in the middle of the village. until today it is not known how this (exact) blue color was made, and therefore the restauration of the church is posing some difficulties
- the castle ruin of Dürnstein – it’s the place where King Richard Lionheart of Great Britain was held captive for some time – he was captured on his way back to Britain from the crusade.

The castle itself was built in the middle of the 12th century and was almost impregnable – almost, because in 1645 it fell to the invading Swedes. and this was more or less the end of the castle itself – since then it has been ruinous and wasn’t rebuilt anymore…
