Amsterdam Street Photography & This is Amsterdam Collection
The Netherlands, Amsterdam – july 2011

Street photograph, made in the city centre of Amsterdam, using the so-called ‘hipshot-technique’ in an adapted version: my camera is too heavy to wear on my hip, so I use to have it hanging on my neck, breast-hight, one hand loosely holding the camera, and pressing the shutter with my thumb, while looking in another direction than the photographed subjects.
Since it is not possible to focus by looking through the lens or on the display, the camera is set on automatic focusing, and aperture priority.
It usually results to somewhat tilted photos, and that was the case in this image too, and since I feared to disturb the young couple, I had made the pic from a little farther away than I use to do. So I had to crop format and angle, and transferred to grey scale in Lightroom and did the finishing touches (sharpening, levels, curves) in Photoshop.
I really love street photography because of the possibility to document the daily life of normal people in public places, through candid photo’s of people I don’t know. I use to feel a special connection with the people I photograph though, and am trying, just in that one moment, to capture something of the very essence, the soul of that person.
This image I particularly like, because of the tension between the youthful intimacy of the young couple, and the blank, distant look of girl at the other side of the stairs, trying to ignore them.
