Sculptured head and rigging by

SAIL 2010, Amsterdam
Saturday August 21, 2010 – Tall ships open for visitors
photojournalism, documentary, reportage

“SAIL Amsterdam is a large maritime event held every five years in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its Eastern harbour, and people can then visit the ships for four days.” (quote Wikipedia)

This photo:
Saturday morning, 7:38 am –
The Russian tall ship frigate Shtandart – replica , ashore in the harbour of Amsterdam.
Sculptured head and rigging – wooden sculpture – detail –
It was hard to get a clear view the sculptured head, since it was on the other (water-) side of the ship – and the ship was slightly swaying, as other boats went by – I had to keep the camera higher, so I couldn’t look thought the viewer nor see the settings while I was photographing. So I experimented with different camerasettings and several shots, in the hope to get the dof, lighting, compo and focus right in at least one of them. Some tinckering and post editing in photoshop and lightroom did the rest.

interesting composition. great light bringing out the ehad

  • Thank you – yes, this was an experiment again. I was very early to be there before the crowds, so the ships weren’t open for visiting yet. So there was no way to come any closure or get an open view of that sculpture (it’s partly visible behind the lionhead too. So I tried several approaches and played with the dof – this was the best take in my opinion :) – the light did help a lot! :)
