Fish enough for both of us? by

Walk around the lake collection
Netherlands, Amsterdam, Gaasperplas

Dec. 19, 2010
We got even more snow last night, so I woke up early and decided to take my camera and go to the park around the lake. Little did I expect it would be such a marvellous birding experience!

I was very happily surprised to find two of my favourite water birds at the very same spot, near a small air hole in the ice… both looking out for the same fish – but with very different fishing-habits… Here they are, my two favourites: Great Crested Grebe Wikipedia and Grey Heron Wikipedia

Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera and Tamron 70-300mm Tele-macro1:2 lens
exp.time 1/90 sec. at f/4
ISO 200 Focal length 160 mm

It is so amazing for me to see a Great Blue Heron in that part of the world and it looks just like the ones here in the states. Great job, congrats!

  • Well, it actually is the Grey Heron – another subspecies, but indeed, very similar. They only seem to be a bit smaller than their American “Great Blue” counterparts. And there are many of them here in the Netherlands. In fact you see them anywhere. But since I am from Flemish (Belgium) I still enjoy observing them :)
