A mothers eyes don’t lie
Mother and baby mandrill.
Baby mandrill Yaro, 3 days old (born Februari 20, 2010) – together with his momma Ndoki.
Yaro is a boy – his name means ‘son’ in Swahili.

The Mandrill (wikipedia ) is found in moist evergreen rainforest in central west Africa.
Native in Cameroon; Congo; Equatorial Guinea and Gabon

The Mandrill is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species – Status: Vulnerable.
Threats: This species is affected by the destruction of its evergreen forest habitat since this reduces the capacity of environments to support Mandrill populations. However, the most immediate threat is posed by hunting for their meat (which is highly prized in Gabon). Commercial bushmeat hunters pose a particular threat to populations which are located close to main roads and towns. Mandrills appear to be most seriously threatened in Congo (Brazzaville).

Mandrils blijken meest bedreigd in Congo Brazzaville.

This is a gorgeous image. I’ve never seen a baby Mandrill before. He looks like a pixie with those pointy ears.:)

  • Thank you, Ann. Yes, I must say, Mom was very protective of her young, and was hiding it with her own body most of the time. I’ve spent quite some time there, before I finally could catch a view of it. – yes, little pixie indeed LOL
