Romanesque cloister gallery and herb garden - Utrecht by

This is Utrecht
Mariaplaats, Utrecht, the Netherlands
National Heritage site

This Romanesque cloister of St Maria, gallery and herb garden is all that remains of a church founded by King Henry IV in the 11th century and demolished in the 19th century.

While situated in the centre of Utrecht, and often flooded by tourists and students, this is one of the most quiet and lovely little corners in Utrecht I know.
I love to go sit there for a little while on a bench, when I am in Utrecht – enjoying the herb garden, the beautiful architecture, and the music coming from the windows of the adjacent music school…

Mariaplaats, behind the House of Arts and Sciences (Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen; 1840), with a music school and halls for theatrical performances and lectures, which was burned down in 1988 – (source: http://www.planetware.com/utrecht/mariaplaats-n... )

Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera and Pentax 18-55 lens

    Great capture!!!
Please consider putting this into the Which Way group.

  • Thank you so much, Cee – and yes, of course… I didn’t think of it like that, but surely it is a walkway… so… on my way to the ‘which way’ group! :)
