The Batavia – HDR – On the day we visited the Batavia yard, it was very rainy and windy – the dark sky made the ship look even more impressive, and gave some ‘adventurous’ touch to our visit of the place.

Batavia Yard series
First of a series of pics about the Batavia yard I plan to upload in the coming days/weeks – just stay tuned ;)

  1. “The Batavia Yard” in Lelystad, the Netherlands, is foremost a center for traditional shipbuilding. Since 1985 over 200 young people have built an authentic reconstruction of the VOC-merchantman Batavia from 1628. " – read more about this amazing place, and about the reconstruction of this marvellous sail ship here Batavia Yard
  2. Some material of the original ship wreck is exhibited in the Western Australia Fremantle Maritime Museum – read more about it here
Thanks to Andrew Makowiecki for bringing in this additional info! :)

Technical details
Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera and Pentax 18-55 lens –
HDR proces info : Pseudo-HDR made from 1 pic (f/3.5, 1/1000sec, 200 iso – handheld) – I first did some retouching (removed a disturbing flag and light pole at both edges left and right , then slightly adjusted levels and sharpening in Photoshop 7.0 – Then I imported the image in Lightroom 2 and made 5 copies with different exposures. Since the orig pic was underlighted, I choose for exposure settings -1 0 +1 +2 +3 . Then exported each of these pics to use in Dynamic Photo HDR program to make the HDR version

this is totally awesome dear ! and the colors are superb… awwww
now, this is something I’ve never done (HDR) and from only one picture, I’m curious to know the process :p well done my friend

  • Thanks a lot, Aimelle! – well, I used Dynamic Photo HDR – and I must admit, the results are fabulous, and it’s quite easy to learn the process. I would continue playing with it forever… I’m sure you will like it too! You can use the trial, but the program will then leave a watermark on your end-result.
You may also like to try this free program instead picturenaut – just found that link, and am going to try it out myself too… ;)

Wow beautiful ship!!! I’ve been on one similar in Mexico for an exursion…can’t believe the workmanship put into these!!

  • Yes, it’s incredible that people made this by hand (like, of course they have been doing through the ages… ) – it was marvellous to see them at work on the yard! – thanks for your kind comment! :)
