Joachim Gauck, the new German President made the opening speech at the Liberation Memorial Day ceremony of the Netherlands (May 5, 1945) in Breda. An estimated 30,000 visitors participated in the celebrations.

The official opening ceremony of the Liberation Memorial Day of the Netherlands (May 5, 1945) this year took place in the Province North Brabant.
Mr.Joachim Gauck, the new German president, was invited by the May 5 Committee to make the opening speech. Location for this event was the Grote Kerk (Large Church) in Breda, in the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prins Willem Alexander of the Netherlands, demissionary Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Queen’s Commissioner of the province of North Brabant Wim van de Donk, Deputy Mayor of Breda Alfred Arbouw, and many other prominents and invited guests.

During the yearly 5-May Speech, the speaker elaborates on the meaning of “Freedom”, as well in the Netherlands as all over the world.
This year, the central theme of the celebration was “Freedom is something you pass on” .
In 1995, H.M. Queen Beatrix was the first to make the yearly May 5 – speech . Later followed by as well Dutch as foreign speakers, like the South-African Ambassador Carl Niehaus and old- prime ministers Ruud Lubbers and Wim Kok. Mr. Joachim Gauck is the first German to make the speech.

After the opening ceremony in the Grote Kerk, demissionary Prime Minister Mark Rutte lit the Liberation Fire, assisted by Yvonne Raaijmakers (photographer). With this symbolic act, all 14 Liberation Festivals and 5 May celebrations all over the country were officially opened. Then “Guus” Meeuwis, singer and songwriter, started the celebrations in Breda with a musical performance.
An estimated 30.000 people were expected to participate in the festivities and cultural activities, spread all over the city.
