Location, Location...

I am scratching my head and rubbing my unbeard and it’s beginning to hurt, so I’m after a little bit of help with my pondering…

I am after a couple of locations for a shoot this Wednesday.

First one is somewhere a bit overgrown and grassy, childhood-backyardy, perhaps an empty lot…anyone know where there’s an empty lot in Melbourne? Preferably Inner-ish North.

Second, I need an indoors granny-vintage kinda location. Wallpaper would be ace. Maybe a few bits of furniture. Does a cafe or bar somewhere ‘round Melbourne spring to anyone’s mind? I know they’re out there…but I’ve got The Daftness at the moment and can’t bloody nail it. We’ve thought of Prudence, upstairs, but it’s pretty dark and I’m keen on using natural light. Also thought of the Butterfly Club, but reckons it’s so over-the-top kitch that the location would swallow up the subject.

Any ideas would make me do a jig.

Thankee!

xx

Hopetoun Tea Rooms in the Block Arcade, could be okay… they have crazy old green wallpaper. It might be a bit too fancy

The Terminus Hotel, Abbotsford (near skipping girl) has kitschy wallpaper in the dining room but the furniture isn’t granny vintage… the girls toilets has ace wallpaper too, again, no furniture, the upstairs bit has cool wallpaper and old furniture – probably worth a trip out there.

There are two empty lots on Yambla St in Clifton Hill… one is fenced off but it’s been empty for over a year and it’s full of weeds and grass, the other is very grassy and lush and could be what you’re after…. Yambla St is in the pocket between Hoddle St, the Eastern Freeway and the Merri Creek parkland.

Each Peach in Lygon St Brunswick has just opened and their back room may be what you’re looking for if you want soemthing more understated. It has a sensational wallpaper, not much in the way of furniture though, but what there is IS vintage or found objects. I don’t know the number but it is right up near Albion St, opposite the large Organic Grocery Store on the left. Further than 438 Lygon St, past Foodworx but not as far as the corner with McDonalds. On your right if you’re going away from the city.

Ace Darren, thank you! Don’t really need much privacy, so will go check that out…and will have a sneaky peek at the backyard too.

Oh Helen, it was so perfect…an absolute stoke of genius from you, thank you! Various beautiful papers, a few lamps, polished floorboards, and so perfectly light-filled…it made my day!!! Thank you hugely!

And Erin, Erin, that second vacant lot was spot on…that long green grass, the decrepit-wooden-fenced…and there was a lone chair in the middle of the lot that perfectly matched the red of my subject’s tights. We loved it! So the right childhood backyardy vibe. Thank you, thank you!!!

Oh i’m really glad it worked out! Would’ve sucked to get there and for it not to be right. I actually drove past it yesterday and saw the chair and wondered if you’d end up using it. Can’t wait to see the photos!
