The Night Owl by Stephanie Smith
Clear

When Barbara opened up the doors for some good old-fashioned artist collaborations, I just had to jump in and participate!

This piece was drawn for an “exquisite corpse” collaboration based on a puzzle piece shape, where every artist drew a section with only a tiny hint of what the adjacent pieces looked like. Still confused? Go view the complete piece for an explanation and to see the finished product!

Thanks so much to Barbara for organizing, Matt for coming up with the idea and drawing one of the adjacent pieces that guided this one, Lisa who drew the one on the other side, and all the other lovely collaborators who participated… it’s unreal how good it all looks put together!

The star of the show is an Eagle Owl, and was based on some photos I took at a falconry show.

Drawn with ink pens (and some brush fills) on 9×12 smooth bristol paper, with some very minor digital edits to reformat it as a stand-alone piece. Copyright 2010 Stephanie Smith, all rights reserved aside from use in the Puzzle Collaboration here on RedBubble.

This is exquisite work Stephanie, I love it. So happy our pieces joined in the puzzle, both birds, worked perfectly. Love the detail of your ink work, really beautiful.

  • Thanks Lisa! I was so curious to see what your piece was like from the little hints, they are so similar and so different, it all looks so good together! (and I had fun copying your leaf pattern lol!)

Stephanie this is AWESOME! I love owls so much and your work is so beautiful! Yours and lisas pieces look so perfect together…of course all the pieces look great together but I love the flow in this collab…neat all the similarities etc. SO much fun

  • Thank you so much, Shannon!
It’s amazing how well the collab flows together, from the ruffly organic bits to the abstract mystical bits to the geometric urban bits like your piece. so cool….

Oooh, I love it!! Just love it!! I saw it in the EC, and cropped it makes the most gorgeous print!! VERY into owls at the moment, and (this will make you smile) my original piece for teh EC was an owl too, but I couldn’t get it to fit nicely into the puzzle, so changed it….how spooky is that?

  • Thank you Alexandra! Yeah, I drew a little extra so he could be the star of his own show too. :)

I can SEE how into owls you are in your portfolio, lol… I had trouble fitting him in too, I originally wanted a more upright pose, but found one that just fit in with my photos… those puzzle piece edges are tricky to work around, aren’t they?
