Just a silly bit of fanart drawn for the ISoDIWD Demona Art Jam thread
I don’t usually do fanart, but I just couldn’t resist with this one. ‘Gargoyles’ was one of my favorite shows when it was first on, and it’s held up since I got the DVDs. One of the first kids’ cartoons that didn’t talk down (much), had a long-form storyline with plot points that carried across episodes and whole seasons, actual character development, numerous references to history, literature, and mythology — that actually paid attention to those sources instead of just name-dropping them, above-average production values and animation, and some really unique character designs.
Demona is an excellent example of the kind of nuanced character they had in the show. Hardly any of the villains in the series were “evil for the sake of being evil” (tho there were a few) but they all had specific motivations for their actions. Everything Demona did was predicated on the belief that she thought she was doing the right thing to help her people survive, layered so thickly with denial over her own actions being the direct cause of so much of their destruction that she lashed out viciously at anyone who challenged her world view. AND she could kick the butts of foes twice her size without a thought.
In this piece I was trying something a little different: I drew the lines in pencil and used Photoshop to darken them up so it looks more like an ink drawing. It’s a “digital inking” technique I’ve seen others use and I’ll probably do a few more pieces like this to see how I like it. It is a bit faster, but I don’t think I’ll be giving up my inks any time soon. :)
