The Wolf at the Door

Artist's Description

Taken from Aesop’s Fables, the actual title is “The Hungry Wolf and the Mother” or the “Wolf and the Nursemaid.”

In the story, the wolf overhears a mother inside the house, scolding her child and threatening “If you’re not quiet, I’ll throw you to the hungry wolf outside!”

The wolf waits around the whole rest of the day and into the night, expecting a tasty meal. But by bedtime, he hears the mother soothing her child to sleep saying “If that mean wolf comes around, we’ll kill him!” So the wolf went home hungry, disgusted with himself and lamenting that he was foolish enough to believe her in the first place.
