According to the Greek legends, Acteon was a hunter who happened to find the goddess Diana bathing at a pool in the woods. Furious at the intrusion, she cursed the young man, turning him into a deer so that he could not tell anyone else that he had seen her naked.
The version of the story that inspired this image came from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which ended quite badly for poor Acteon.
