Pure Watercolour on Arches 140lb

This was a painting done on my recent trip to France.

I picked a couple of white roses picked from the garden of the Gite where we stayed. Put them in a glass. Starting from the centre of one rose I worked outwards developing each petal as I went, adding foliage along the way. By turning the roses I could get different views. I prefer to work this way with flowers rather than draw them first, they have a different kind of freedom with a more natural look.

They were actually white roses, but I decided to add colour to them, after all, white isn’t always white.
