oil on canvas 75cm x 60cm 2010

This is a distraction from my main painting I’m trying to finish. Monkey heads are wooden rivets that hold mud walls together. I’ve turned them into pins that hold two fine beetles captive.
I like the idea of the two heads connecting. I have sketches of a more Celtic link between the heads which may be developed later.

    Strange and fascinating!

  • Thankyou Miron! I find it strange too!! I’m almost detached from my work as though its done by someone else.. but I’m not a dual personality!! No, we are definitely not!!!

Beautiful abstraction of the objects…the info about ‘monkey heads’ is interesting! The shapes, and the way they’re rendered, always fascinates me about your work.

  • Thankyou so much Cindy!! I saw the monkey heads on tv – sadly I cannot claim to have been on Safari exploring the darkest jungles!!!
The mud buildings in Africa need stabilised (I suppose because of the extreme temperatures between night and day.. and mud is hardly robust like concrete or stone.)
There is a mud temple somewhere which I cant name that gets maintained every year by the local people as the walls deteriorate. This inspires me to make a work about this…
You would see huts with dozens of these ‘wooden rivets’ going up the walls like the studded face of a pierced punk rocker!! They look amazing yet they are purely functional. Well I love the look of these things so will continue to include them in my meanderings!!
    Thankyou again Cindy!!!!!
