This drawing was me trying to release the anxiety and helplessness of life threatening illness.
I felt like my life was stuck in concrete when I had to recover from ulcerative colitis.. and often the concrete that held me was itself drifting towards and down a waterfall!
With Celtic art still a massive influence despite my three years of illness, this self portrait shows a man reduced to fighting angrily with a flower. I think I was angry at everything for a while!
I also see a man walking harmlessly along but he becomes entangled with a strange plant that tries to stop him in his tracks.
Nearly ten years on and the weed-killer survived!!

Oops, I think the weed getting a little out of hand…. I don’t recall seeing this rough style of pen and ink before from you. I like it though, and how you captured the light on him from top, left. Awww ch-it. I’m over-analyzing, why do we do that…. it’s a cool piece. :)

  • Which one is the weed?? Illness left me like this. I think more work on the flower to symbolise illness would be good but I never achieved a painting of this image. I saw the drawing last night and liked it though! Glad you like it too!!! Speak to you later!!
