oil on canvas 1993
From faceless block figures to block faces. I always go back to representing the face. My earliest drawings as a boy were of bizarre faces and my clay models from childhood were little heads which often featured my newly lost teeth!
I hope I didnt worry my parents too much! Also the small toothy men made amusing christmas presents!!

WOW!! I love your style, great cubism, worth every minute of staring!!:))

  • picasso haunted me for years!! He shook my bed and woke me every night shouting ‘Dont do a Picasso!! Do a Mclaren!!!’ so I tried and sometimes failed!!!

Really fascinating. I like your works from your “cubism period” very much.

  • Thankyou Frannie, I hated this pic so I stamped on it, scraped it and used sandpaper to try and kill it. When I calmed down, I re-worked the colours and it looked fine. I do this destructive process every now and then to get some ‘character’ into the piece. You can still see some sandpaper marks around the woman’s head…
Dont know if Da Vinci did this or would allow it but it works for me!!!

Wonderful cubism feel and old style color palette!

  • Thankyou Sarah! I mugged this painting when I had worked quite hard on it so that it was messed up and ruined. From the wreckage came this and the colouring you mention. I liked it enough then to leave it alone and sell it!

    Great works!!

  • Thankyou Casey!! I did quite a few of these but few survive in reproduction sadly. I did well selling most of the paintings in this style but at the time didnt photograph them well. I will try to collage a few small photos together and put them on RB so you can see more like this… ‘Randoms’ is a collection of sketches from this time if you havent seen that one yet 8-))))
