Artist's Description

1992 oil on canvas 120cm x 80cm

In my early twenties I painted ziggurat inspired massive architectural scenes depicting unpopulated worlds. I then inhabited these paintings with block people. Their angular forms helped them fit into the square, stepped style of buildings which I had been creating.

After a while, the figures became the only thing I was concerned with and I ended up clothing them and creating scenes for them.
Here I tried to paint the contrast between a moving figure and a static one. ‘The last request’ became the story.

‘Waiting on the shore’ is an earlier block painting showing where an image like this came from. Its the mother of this child!

‘The Last Request’ felt like my best work at the time. That and ‘waiting on the Shore’.
I nearly sold this canvas several times, but somehow I still have it.
