In my early twenties I painted ziggurat inspired massive architectural scenes depicting unpopulated worlds. I then inhabited these paintings with block people. Their edges helped them fit into the square, stepped style of buildings which I had been doing.
After a while, the figures became the only thing I was concerned with and I ended up clothing them and creating scenes for them. Here I tried to make a contrast between a moving figure and a static one. ‘The last request’ became the story to show this contrast.
‘Waiting on the shore’ is an earlier block painting showing where an image like this came from. Its the mother of this child!
