Retalliation

oil on floorboards 1993
This painting, one of several using the ripped up floorboards of my rotting tenement flat in Dundee, was my reaction to a young boy on the news who swore to murder the men who killed his family during the Yugoslavian civil war.
I was horrified to see innocence being ripped from his heart and replaced by revenge and hatred.
Sixteen years on, I wonder how that boy has grown. Who can say if he has made a peaceful life for himself. I hope so.
The red emblem on the hat was a symbol painted on the houses that had been ‘cleansed’ by the murdering armies.

what a tragic story. And an extraordinarily brilliant portrayal of it.I love how the painting on each floorboard doesn’t quite match up with the one next to it, it just adds more to the story.I would expect(and be excited) to see this in a collection of great works some day. I can’t praise it enough.

I think Sticky Flower has summed it up beautifully! I truly love your choice of colours… glimmers of hope maybe in that you’ve chosen not to portray this idea in heavy blacks and greys… but rather there are some gorgeous colours here… subdued in some instances but still present… maybe I’m rambling… oh and I love the floorboards too… : ))

What a thoughtful political peice. The human side of art is often tragic. What did happen to that boy? Sometimes I think we all need to just get stoned and forget about hating each other. Maybe Soma,,,,,, (kidding. I abhor the beast in us and I look to science for an answer). Very nice Stephen
