I don’t think so. So long as consciousness survives, there is meaning and hope. When consciousness dies, all is lost: and it is under attack from every side. In terms of natural selection (in terms, too of capitalism) there is no need for intelligence, or for cultural evolution. What both Darwinism and Adam Smith depend on is our promiscuity: the first of them to reproduce, the second in order to consume – in other words, the conformity of a conditioned reflex.
