"If we ever get this nut off - anyone got a spanner?"
Yesterday I reported the swarming of thousands of these beautiful creatures in the Mount Burr Forest in the South East of the State. This lot were clustered around the nut on a bolt holding the side plate onto a powerpole.
Interestingly I went back today and nearly all of the tens of thousands had disappeared back to wherever they came from. What a magical twenty four hours this was.
Thanks to Biggzie (see his site for some great images) I can now tell you that they are the:
Common Spotted Ladybird
Harmonia conformis
Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with speedlight.

You are so very lucky to find these shots! Staggering colour and shape combination.
Was the nut removed by the following day? Or did they not find a spanner big enough?

Reminds me of the great Ladybird Plauge of 76 in the U.K. !!

Well done, Steve. The flash reflections on their backs add an extra dimension

I’d assume the coming weather would be amongst the reason for the swarm and for them being hidden today…

Too funny – great title!!!!!!

I’m amazed by their identical markings. I think these are asian beetles, sometimes mistaken for lady bugs, but when they infest our area, they have various designs on their backs. What a wonderful sight and beautiful capture of it.

Spectacular!

Seen this before…....an amazing sight, for sure…...and cute as well!
Great title!!
I wonder whether there is something in rust, or the corrosion process, that attracts them?
Maybe they need an iron fix occasionally…...
Terrific image!

Another great capture and image Steve, the light on the little fellows is a little distracting however. Read previous comment and realise it’s the flash. ... :)

Great shot. I love ladybirds, but I don’t think I would like them if they were at my house in large numbers. I used to love catching them as a kid.
