Ladybird Cavern
I’m lucky enough to have a small secret place I visit where these beautiful creatures seem to congregate and or breed. I love visiting and watching them in their thousands as they sneak in and out of small gaps and caverns. An amazing act of nature.

Fantastic capture, very hard to photograph like that. well done.
did you know that the males have thicker and less black spots than the females. i only know because i have a spot in my heater flue that they tend to keep coming back to, to hybanate. unfortunately they do this in winter, when we have the fire on, some days i can have 20-30 ladybugs around the lounge, and a few who have not made it off the top of the fire box.
Marion Cullen

great picture! My only problem with these guys is that they have a secret place in our house. Our bedroom. Which means I spend most of the winter concienciously “rehoming” the stragglers that fly around the room every time we turn a light on!

Steve Chapple replied
Was spoilt….believe it or not the local Council went up to this place and killed the lot. Seems they were getting into a nearby building and instead of putting up a barrier they just sprayed the lot. I went back two weeks ago and not even one left!!!
Thank for the visit and comment.

This is stunning and extremely well taken…. great effort Steve.
Lee Varney
great shot!! did you use any filters or photoshop it at all? (just new in photograpy, so trying to get tips from ppls in the know)
Steve Chapple replied
Lee, thanks for the visits and comments. This shot was particularly hard as the ladybirds were back in an unlit tunnel and the on camera flash and speedlight both shot outside the hole creating darkness. I ended up lighting the tunnel with a small torch and mirror and then used the macro as you see it. The colours around the image are left after just adjusting contrast. I have been asked a number of times to remove them with photoshop but have just left them as is.
