Seaton Rose in a Snow Storm, Staithes by

I have enjoyed completing my first piece from my latest visit to my favourite painting location, Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast near Whitby.
Seaton Rose is a double ender, a wooden, clinker built fishing boat of the north east coast of England.

My love of the sea stems from my childhood. I was born in Hartlepool on the North East coast and visited the little fishing village of Staithes often, as I still do today. The fishing cobles to be found on the North East coast serve as my models.

Love this one Sue – it feels soooo cold! Also interesting that the Seaton Rose has a canoe stern, not at all usual for a coble – certainly on the Northumberland coast.

  • Thank you Nigel, in Staithes they are known as ‘double enders’ and are quite common. I wonder if they are peculiar to Staithes?
