The most photographed, painted view in the whole of Staithes so I just had to do a version.
Staithes lies on the north east coast of England , just north of Whitby. The cottage on the left is known as ’Smuggler’s Cottage’
This painting is acrylic on canvas 60 × 40 cm. The texture is created with texture paste on the top of black gesso and then more black gesso is applied before beginning to paint.

My love of the sea stems from my childhood. I was born in Hartlepool on the North East coast and visited the little fishing village of Staithes often, as I still do today. The fishing cobles to be found on the North East coast serve as my models.

thanks so much for explaining your ‘texture technique’… I’ve been curios… AND as you show us here… when applied by a master… it is so effective… and beautiful!

There’s that touch of a little red roof again. Really love that. Fantastic as usual!!

  • Many thanks, Deborah. those red roof tops are a gift to artists/photographers.
