graphite on watercolor paper 2008 9″ × 12″

I made this drawing in homage to my favorite rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) who sometimes referred to himself in his songs as the black Frank White, which was the name of a character played by Christopher Walkin in one of my favorite movies, King of New York. I originally was gonna put ink over it, but I liked the outline too much so I left it unfinished.

Only after making this drawing did I notice that Biggy Smalls had a slight lazy eye. You only notice it sometimes since he wore sunglasses a lot.

At the time when I made this I was listening mostly to two songs from his first album Ready To Die. One was that song “Machine Gun Funk” where he goes “i live fo tha funk, i die fo tha funk” and the other one was “Who Shot Ya” where in the instrumental you here a female voice saying “as long as you live and breathe…. another day…. another day…”
