Tabernas, near Almeria in South East, Spain is a barren mountainous area. What many people don’t know is that 100’s of films have been shot there. The Tabernas Desert is genuine cowboy country–gray, dusty, barren hills that make your mouth dry just to look at them. Remember how hot and dusty Lee van Cleef and Clint Eastwood looked in A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Well that’s because those movies were filmed there, along with a hundred others. This was where Sergio Leone shot his Spaghetti Westerns. Most of it is deliciously, authentically false-real, phony buildings that were actually used in films…

But Tabernas might look familiar because of other movies too, not just westerns. Remember the hills of Arabia in Lawrence of Arabia? Those were Tabernas hills, and the strange barren mountains the little troop marches through at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the train races through at the end? They wereTabernas mountains too! You might remember backgrounds from Cleopatra, Doctor Zhivago, Patton, The Wind and the Lion, and many others too. They were all shot in Tabernas. I wonder how many of you knew that?!

Another great shot Celia. I’m not surprised they made so many movies there – the light and clarity is beautiful in every one of the photos you have taken there.

Well I for one didn’t know any of that. Thanks for the great information. It makes me want to go visit. Great photo and great info. DI

  • Thank you Dave, there are various sets around there and Oasys had a fab zoo too, but you may only like that if you have kids! Look up Tabernas in Google and western films, it will show you.
