DEEP UNDERGROUND, Bateria de Castillitos by

In a musky smelling underground room, deep under the decommisioned Vickers guns at the Bateria de Castillitos (Cabo Tiñoso), is part of the Auxiliary Engine – Petter 25HP. The system included four of the largest artillery pieces ever made – huge 38.1 Vickers guns with a range of some 20 miles. These guns remain in place, two here at the Castillitos battery, at Cabo Tiñoso, near Puerto de Mazarron, and not far away, two at the Cenizas battery, near La Manga Club. This engine was situated in a motor house under the 381/45 gun. It was used for starting the dynamo which generated 24 volts DC for lighting in the guns and magazines, for a compressor which supplied accumulators for starting, refilling the recoil mechanism of the gun and to power refrigeration equipment.

I thank all the fabulous artists on Redbubble for inspiring me to improve my photography. These days I mostly take portrait shots and on a part-time basis do so for money! It all helps in funding more photography gear! I thank you for looking at my work. Click to find my photography website Cherish Me and my Facebook Page

cool photo looks very damp their must have smelt nasty…lol

  • Thanks Dave, generally damp it is probably not as it we generally have a dryer climate, but slightly damp yes, it smelt musky and stale! This place has no health safety, it is not an official tourist attraction, miles and miles up a bumpy narrow, mountain lane. Pitch black, we took a torch, holes in the floor where machinery had been stolen, removed, there was graffiti everywhere, so fascinating.

Guns and engines on a damp Sunday night…my GOD woman you know how to make a boys heart race! Two great shots! I would not have liked to have been on the receiving end of that gun!

  • It was fabulous, all the better for being “ungoverned”, no safety, no lights, nothing!

  • No it’s an amazing place, I found on a website one of these engines which is now in some museum…. this is the middle section and also has bits missing off it…. there were pullies on the ceilings, rails on the ground, metal tubes that went up into the ceiling where the shells were taken to load into the guns, I took a photo of them, but it doen’t look that exciting… there was an iron ladder that went through a hatch, and above that was the huge turntable that the gun swung round on….. It really was fabulous and worth getting lost for!

    Great capture, well done

  • Thanking you again, it was a huge adventure exploring the dark underground rooms and tunnels trying to find this room, I knew somewhere there were the remains of the machinery etc…..
