Remains of Roman Theatre & Santa Maria La Vieja Cathedral, Cartagena, Spain

The Roman Theatre of Cartagena was built at the end of the 1st Century BC when Cartagena was a Roman colony, in the era of Emperor Augustus. The theatre was not discovered until 1987 and many of the finds are in the Archaeological Museum.
The terraced seats were built into the northern side of La Concepcion hill which had been excavated to create seating for 6000. Santa Maria La Vieja Cathedral, which you can see mainly at the top left to centre of the photo was built in the 13th Century from materials taken from the Roman theatre. By the sixteenth century, the theatre had been lost to fire and its remains built over and remained well hidden by the town of Cartagena as it grew over the ruins, and was not discovered again until 1987. The town was asked to vote as to whether or not, the buildings standing there in 1987 should remain, or be torn down to find the ruins. The town voted in favour of the excavation and reconstruction of the Roman Theatre. My photo shows how it stands today. Once again in the glory of Rome, many of it’s fine treasures still remaining.

This is wonderful, so much detail in such a small area, it must be magnificent to see in real life, thank you for the visit and the writing, at least I was there for a moment :)

Cartagena and the surrounding area has so much to see, it will take me many many visits to see all the wonderful sights. I have done afew and am gradually adding bits and pieces, some i have removed from RB as they had not received many comments, but generally the area is stepped in history… absolutely facsinating. Thanking you for your kind comment :O)

This is great!! It looks like a painting .. too perfect!!

It was lovely, it was a pain trying to get a shot without people in it! And again trying to get an artisic perspective. I took a quick snap of it from the castle, which had i not have chopped a bit off wall off would have been an alternative view. I’ll try again from that angle next time I go to Cartagena! Sometimes something you think will look good when you download it to the computer, just isn’t right! Thanking you for stopping by :O)

This is one of my favourite photos but wasn’t received as well as i would have liked! I am glad you like it too! There is loads to see and do around Cartagena, my photos of La Union and Portman are within 5-10 minutes, La Mazarron and the Batteria is within 20mins. There is another Batteria near Portman I have yet to find. La Manga country club where all the footballers go for winter training, and loads in Cartagena itself!

There is something about the stone here in Spain that just radiates warmth of colour, love the detail, great composition.
