Bateria de Castillitos, Cabo Tiñoso

Although military architecture is often ugly, here the Battery
has been built into the mountainside in the style of a castle, using a lot of
local stone. During the early part of the 20th century a system of coastal defences was constructed to protect the vital harbour of Cartagena. This included forts, guns, fire control systems, searchlights and many other elements. The system included four of the largest artillery pieces ever made – huge 38.1 Vickers guns with a range of some 20 miles. These guns remain in place, two here at the Castillitos battery, at Cabo Tiñoso, near Puerto de Mazarron, & two at the Cenizas battery, near La Manga Club. Up in the open air, the mean and menacing guns point seaward and they would have been virtually impossible to spot from any distance, with their low profile and camouflage. At the back of the battery, out of sight of observers on warships, however, imagination has been allowed to run riot in a mass of turrets, castle walls and decorative stonework. The effect is pretty comical when one considers the deadly power of the guns to the front. Look up and below the big guns and you can see other batteries.

This place has no health safety, it is not an official tourist attraction, miles and miles up a bumpy narrow, mountain lane out on a peninsula South of Cartagena. Underground it was pitch black, we took a torch, there were holes in the floor where the “railled carts” transported the shells, and where machinery had been stolen/removed, there was graffiti everywhere, so fascinating, so sad as so much has been lost to theft and vandalism and general abandonment.

I love this shot! The lighting is perfect, and the image is very crisp and clear. There’s something about old walls… :-)

  • Squealia replied

Thanks Johanne, this place was just amazing, miles and miles from anywhere, out on a peninsula, quite a few people go there, but it’s all unofficial, although there were signs up, about restoring it, so maybe it will become an official tourist attraction….. glad we went there now!

Thanking you Angel, what amazes me is that this was only built about 1930… strange that a modern battlement is so ornate!

Thanking you Fay, there are some fab places to see around and near Cartagena, we have another Bateria, near La Manga country club and Portman, to find this winter, it’s a 40 min walk from the road.

ooh I love this one Squealia – so warm and inviting I want to go further now….....I can’t believe how modern the building actually is! I love your treatments they are always so delicate it’s hard to tell if you have played or not!

  • Squealia replied

I have usually played with them, but most I now only adjust slightly, enough to enhance them without making them too false….. my earlier ones like the Townhall at Cartagena is extreme psuedo HDR, some it suits but most are better with a little tinkering! Thanking you :O)
