The coffin walk from Grasmere to the neigbouring village of Ambleside dates back to when Ambleside did not have a church so pall bearers walked this route to Grasmere, the final leg a flat stone known as the coffin stone was placed to allow the bearers to catch their breath before composing themselves for a dignified entry to Grasmere.
