Yes, it’s quite a tangy tree, with a zingy zest to the inhabitants of its’ branches.

Maples are lovely, in all sorts of ways, including the spilling of their distilled blood onto pancakes.

  • Simon Duckworth replied

Ahhh yes to maple syrup.. not big fans over in the UK, but still very nice on pancakes.. i love maples and the varied colours of there leaves, got one in my back garden.. red leaves.

Yes, well, I can’t help what people in the U.K. are fans of or not. Some things transcend such petty differences, and the majority of people I’ve known who came from the U.K. and who had the good fortune to venture into Texas became big, big fans of maple flavored treats. Texas? Oh yes.

Normally, I would not say anything about it being good fortune, being in Texas, but, when it comes to maple, there is a great place to be. There are little pit stop sort of places, look like nowhere much you’d want to be, that make these maple sugar pecan log rolls which are proof of God and a very good reason to want to venture into Texas. There are many, many Irish and Scottish persons direly hooked on them, I know. They order in! English, not so much, but some, oh yes. Less English to Irish/Scottish ratio actually go to Texas, last I heard.

Maple syrup, the real stuff, is very, very good for you, and even though it’s horribly expensive, it also takes so much less to give you a taste of goodness than that nasty stuff they sell as “maple syrup”. Aside from which, Maples have many other fine uses than just the syrup/sugar angle.

It just so happens that I bought my dad a pecan log roll of a nougat kind, that was very inferior to other nougat kinds as it turned out, and none of them could come close to the maple sugar ones. So, I’ve been thinking about Maple trees, where to get maple sugar, and such a lot over the last day or two.
