Karianna barely recognized her hometown as she walked down the tattered street and by the burnt homes. Being the excellent tracker that she was, and being that she knew more about dragons than most, she could quickly assess what had happened to the town. The battle had started in the air, she could tell by the older burns on the trees that were no longer smoldering. They were along the tops of the trees, on the west end of town, and worked their way down to the houses on the north. The main battle had been fought in the town square, where the market was. She could see scratches all over the ground where a great beast had tried to take flight, but was fought back down by its opponent.
And then she came upon the carcass. Lying right in front of her house was a mighty Black Dragon, one of the most evil creatures known to exist. So then the dragon it was fighting must have been good, Karianna thought, for the Black Dragon was at the top of the chain of dominion amongst the Dragon Nobles. None dare to defy the Black Dragons, yet alone fight them to the death, except Dragons that were good natured, and wanted to help people. Then Karianna’s heart started beating faster as she studied the victor’s tracks. She looked them over many more times, but the conclusion was still the same. Clearly a Red Dragon had fought the Black one. For the claw markings had seven toes, and only the Red Dragons had seven toes. So was this a rebellion between the Nobles?
“What has happened?” Runo interrupted her thoughts. He had been watching her for sometime as she studied the tracks, and noticed her expression change to panic. People started emerging from their huts as they noticed a local hero return. Karianna was well appreciated in her town, and one of many adventurers with a righteous reputation.
“Something I don’t quite understand.” Even though she was alarmed, she didn’t allow it in her voice. She looked at her lover with troubled eyes. “A Red Dragon has slain this one.” Runo turned away from her to the dead creature in the road, his face expression a stone cold stare at the dead carcass of the Black Dragon. He knew this was bad. If there was a rebellion, the evil creatures would battle all over The Seven Realms, not caring for the life of civilizations. Sights like this would be seen all across the country.
“Kari, thank the gods!” Her mother ran up from one of the crowds and wrapped her in a warm embrace. “Maybe you can make some sense of this mess.”
“No Mother,” she said full of regret. “I’ve already read the story of the battle.” She explained with little hope what she saw, the small group now gathered around her moaned in fear at her conclusion. Friends and family that she’d known most of her life began to cry again, shedding tears for the hopeless situation as well as the loved ones lost from the fiery Dragon fight. Runo, standing right by her side, reached out to offer his arm in support. She took it, leaning against him as she surveyed the crowd. Faces turned grim. Aimee stepped out from the crowd as well, and ran to her sister.
“I think I know what to do.”
