Death comes to us all. It is the one absolute inevitability we all must face. From this you can not run and can not hide. In Buddhist terms death is a mere phase we pass through in our endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth until karma is resolved and we are able to lift away from Samasara. Death and rebirth also occur in each moment as we are reborn into each instant. Old ideas give way to new and we arrive at the next point. Whilst death is seemingly sad, it is also quite a beautiful event. After all, who wants to live forever in this worn out, achy sack of skin! In Buddhism we are taught many things about the phase of death and we meditate upon that phase of the cycle, but what death really is best seen as I feel, is a time of renewing the journey home. It’s like when you are driving across the country and your car breaks down; you still know where you are going, you still have some travelling to do, so you hire a new one to get you there! Our continuum or sphere of consciousness passes through that thin vail that separates and we begin the next phase of our journey home. I have lost loved ones and felt the pain of this but was greatly eased knowing that their suffering was done and they were onto the next phase of their journey. Namaste.
