It was twilight on perfect July evening when I discovered Gracie with her four kittens. Nothing surprising in that you may think – but as I had been feeding the desperately thin and battle-scarred stray – I had believed her to be only a kitten herself!
Plans were frantically formulated to capture mother and babes to ensure their future well-being. Gracie was eventually caught with the assistance of a borrowed cat-trap and a tin of sardines in tomato sauce!
I will never forget the battle to get her into the cat-carrier and off to the vets where she was duly neutered. As I later released her there were tears in my eyes – I feared for her future life as yet another unloved feral….
So why is Gracie so ‘Amazing’ ?…. Well, not only did she survive her life as a stray, she successfully gave birth to, provided and cared for, her four beautiful kittens although only a baby herself. Having known nothing but neglect and cruelty this remarkable lady took all her courage and gave human-kind a second chance – for here she sits next to me as I write, those beautiful eyes now full of trust and contentment.
