By popular request, I’ve rendered one of my best-selling apparel designs into a big ol’ flashy poster. This is perfect for covering up that hole that you punched through the wall, or simply cower beneath it and await his awakening and imminent doom.

Pen illustration combined with original typographical design, completed in Gimp. By all means, view larger.

Inspired by the literature of H.P. Lovecraft and referencing the legendary Cthulhu, an immense, extra-dimensional alien scientist/wizard which once roamed a pre-Human Earth but was thrown into the watery depths, only to awaken ‘when the stars were right’.

While Cthulhu him/herself rests in a deathless sleep somewhere beneath the Pacific, his/her minions remain to coordinate the activities which will result in Cthulhu’s glorious return and the ensuing chaos which will spell the end for humankind.

Here’s the sticker!

I have completed several portraits of Cthulhu or similar Lovecraftian beasts:

Good to see ol’ Cthulhu again; & I love the way you present his/her case! Do you think he/she may rumble to life as a result of solar storms & other cosmic upsets? I recently finished reading the two-volume major opus that is the collected letters of HPL & Robert E. Howard. Despite the pages & pages of racially-biased rhetoric on both sides & the endless nit-picking arguments (often based on misapprehension of the other fellow’s rhetoric), it was a fascinating & absorbing read. Your ever-stunning Cthulhu image reminded me of what HPL said about the Big Monster’s origins. Howard asked him early on in the correspondence if the HPL mythos was based on a real set of ancient traditions, likewise the Necronomicon, but Lovecraft replied, with great good humor, that all these things were products of his childhood, & he himself looked upon them as funny. As a little kid, he called himself Abdul Alhazred, a name he’d come up with with the help of an uncle, an extension of his fascination with all things Arabian Nights. I also have, but haven’t tackled, Joshi’s 2-volume bio of HPL, & Centipede Press’s FABULOUS volume on the Weird Tales circle. My cup runneth over, obviously, but I do have one or two other interests that keep me equally busy…. It’s that So Many Books, So Little Time syndrome.

  • Thanks Sheila! Lovecraft remains an influence despite some of his more “ethnocentric” views, in the same way that I still listen to Cat Stevens despite his conversion and call for author Salman Rushdie’s head, or I still enjoy the occasional ‘Frasier’ rerun despite Kelsey Grammer’s frankly nauseating political stance. It’s taken me a long time to come to terms with the idea that while I may not be able to agree with certain creatives, I cannot deny their incredible imaginations. I haven’t tackled the Joshi bio of Lovecraft . . . something for the Christmas list!

Bingo! I was heartened (if not amazed) to read your comments on two people about whom I have the same perspective ~ Cat Stevens & Kelsey Grammer. Could not agree with you more, though I have to say that the vast majority of People of Reprehensible Viewpoints get a well-punctuated cold shoulder (not to mention The Bird) from me. I do not understand the concept of Celebrity. Who is Kim Kardashian anyway? And WHY do we keep hearing about Lindsay Lohan.

But speaking of celebrity… Cthulhu lives, & congrats on that feature!
