Original hand-drawn line illustration digitally painted in Gimp.
The face of a Deep One, H.P. Lovecraft’s race of fish-people who lived on a reef off the coast of New England in the chilling story ‘The Shadow over Innsmouth’. As frightening as Lovecraft described the ocean-dwelling Deep Ones, those who lived on land in the forgotten town were worse: in a quick glance they may have passed as human, but upon closer inspection one may have noticed their large, unblinking eyes, oddly misshapen heads, or the curious, gill-like folds of flesh on their necks. I shudder even trying to illustrate them. I chose a deep-sea anglerfish as a template to emphasize its alien-ness.
I am quite fond of interpreting the works of H.P. Lovecraft and illustrating the myriad beasties he described.

awesome!
Thanks Lynette, although it’s very strange to have completed a piece and not have my drawing table covered with paint and unwashed brushes . . .

How awesome this is. Great creation and work. Welcome to the world of digital art. :o)
Thanks Bunny! I’ve just realized, however, that this isn’t the final image, but for some reason the RB uploader stalls when I try to replace the work. Grrrrr.

Thank you very kindly for the heads-up!

Ah yes, Innsmouth…. I think the residents there think the tourists are the problem. Great Lovecraftian image!
Of all of the Lovecraft oeuvre, “The Shadow over Innsmouth” still has the best potential for a truly creepy film. The rest of his beasties have been ripped off so much (and so poorly) that their creepiness factor has been diluted. Thanks Artwhiz!

Aw, it looks sad. Awesome work on the rendering man.
Thanks Lloyd. The way the drawing turned out, I guess I wanted to make it looked thoughtful.
