Pigma Micron pen on Aquabee vellum. By all means, view larger.
Inspired by the literature of H.P. Lovecraft and referencing the legendary Cthulhu, an immense, extra-dimensional alien scientist/wizard which once roamed a pre-Human Earth but was thrown into the watery depths, only to awaken ‘when the stars were right’.
While Cthulhu him/herself rests in a deathless sleep somewhere beneath the Pacific, his/her minions remain to coordinate the activities which will result in Cthulhu’s glorious return and the ensuing chaos which will spell the end for humankind.
I decided to illustrate this piece on vellum because I wanted an ultra-smooth, non-textured surface where the ink would remain where I put it. 8″×10″ original.

Thanks Abstractics. Pigmas are top notch disposable technical pens. When the nibs wear a bit they fray and actually produce some interesting micro-brush-like effects.

Wow – where does one start to do something like this. Any chance of you doing a tutorial?
Funny you should ask, Mr. Edwards . . . I have seen some great work-in-progress journal posts recently and started photographing the stages in my current piece (another creepy Lovecraft illustration!). But when I pulled the pics from my camera I was less than impressed with them. Now I’ve got a bee in my bonnet about doing a work-in-progress journal, so keep your eyes open!
