The cicada, also known as a locust or 17-year locust, is more often heard but not seen. Cicadas are responsible for the buzzing racket on warm summer evenings.
Insects are great subjects for studies in reflectivity. I had a lot of fun with the metallic properties of the cicada’s skin.

I have such a hard time with bugs & creepy-crawlies, but somehow, you make them look alot friendlier than I perceive them to be. This cicada looks great! Alot of people here in Ohio really hate them, but I sort of like their sound as it they never seem to hang around all that long. Just another wonderful summer night sound along with the frogs, coyotes & other things which are very endearing to us country folk.

  • Thanks Marsha. Whenever I paint an insect in macro, one of my aims is to reduce the “ick” factor and instead show them as the fascinating higher animals they are. I also don’t mind the cicada’s call, which can be piercing at first but rapidly falls into white noise.

this looks great on a tee shirt

  • Thanks Tony. I am Photoshop-less, so I’ve been creating tshirts via Seashore, an open-source image editor. Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but it does a pretty good job.

Was a witness to a Cicada free for all in Lancaster County in 2003 - I will never forget the noise. This tee design is simply impressive. Great natural symmetry.

    Hi Pete,

I have not yet accepted this sticker into the Cool Stickers group because it’s outline needs some attention. It’s not uncommon for artwork that looks fine as a t-shirt design to have small amounts of “ink” left on the background that are not necessarily intentional parts of the design. These unwanted pixels cause the outline of the sticker to be deformed. or to include islands of unnecessary white sticker material surrounding what may even be almost invisible pixels. (They will be invisible if the unwanted pixels are white) On a T-Shirt printed on a light background these stray pixels are not a serious issue but they do become an issue when the design is used as a sticker.

Once you erase these unwanted pixels from the design and resubmit it I will be happy to accept it into the Cool Stickers group.

    Regards,

    Rupert.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, Rupert.
